You can have your first driving lesson on your 17th birthday, as long as you have your provisional licence which can be applied for up to three months before turning 17. Make sure to get your D1 application in the post. The Driving Standards Agency estimates that someone needs approximately 45 hours of tuition with a further 22 hours of private practice before ready to take a test. Bear in mind that everyone is different when it comes to learning – we all go at our own pace. Your instructor will gear your lessons to the speed with which you learn. No two people are the same, and you will be taught at a speed that suits you personally.
