Driving Test Booking Changes — What You Need to Know (2026 Update)

The DVSA is introducing major changes to the driving test booking system to stop block-booking, the reselling of tests, and automated bots from taking all the available slots. These changes affect every driving school and learner in the UK.

At English School of Motoring, we want to ensure you are fully prepared for how these new rules impact your journey to getting your licence.

What is Changing? (The 2026 Timeline)

To create a fairer system for everyone, the DVSA is rolling out changes in three main phases:

  • 31 March 2026: You can now only change your test date two times (previously, you were allowed up to six changes).

  • 12 May 2026 — THE MAIN CHANGE: Only the learner can book, change, move, or cancel their test. Instructors, driving schools, and third-party services are no longer legally allowed to manage test bookings on your behalf.

  • 9 June 2026: If you need to change your test location, you will only be able to switch to one of your three nearest test centres.

Why is the DVSA Doing This?

The new rules have been designed to completely overhaul the booking system and make it fairer for genuine learners. The goals are to:

  • Stop the bulk-booking and profitable reselling of driving tests.

  • Eliminate automated bots and slot-hoarding by third-party apps.

  • Reduce the massive national waiting list.

  • Give learners full control and transparency over their own test process.

Is This a Legal Rule?

Yes. The DVSA will strictly enforce these new rules using:

  • New mandatory declarations when booking.

  • Advanced system restrictions.

  • Technical blocks specifically designed to prevent driving schools and third-party software from making bookings.

What Your Driving Instructor Can Still Do

While we can no longer physically book the test for you, we are still with you every step of the way. Your instructor will still:

  • Advise you on exactly when you are test-ready.

  • Help you choose the most suitable local test centre.

  • Sit with you in the car while you make the booking on your own device, guiding you through the process.

  • Provide test-day support, including pre-test preparation and the hire of the tuition car for your exam.

We will ensure you fully understand how to book, when to book, and how to prepare for your big day. However, please remember that from May 2026 onwards, the learner must complete the booking process themselves.
