Learning To Drive – What You Need To Know
Learning to drive can be quite a daunting prospect for many people, regardless of how old they are, whether you’ve just turned 17 or you’re finally ready to get behind the wheel after years of being a passenger. However, many people don’t realise there are a number of things you need to know about learning to drive, which will make your first driving lesson much easier and will ensure you have everything you need to get yourself on the road.
How Old Do You Need To Be To Learn To Drive?
In the UK you need to be at least 17 years of age to begin your driving lessons on public roads. However, once you are at least 16 years and 9 months old, you can apply for your provisional license, which is something we would recommend, as it saves waiting around once you turn 17. However, there are some exceptions to the rule, people who receive the enhanced rate of the mobility competent of PIP, can begin driving lessons at the age of 16. Once you reach the age of 17, you will need to decide how you want to learn to drive.
Who Can Teach Me To Drive?
Many people who are looking to drive, want to spend as much time on the roads as possible and it’s understandable why. You can learn with family and friends, however the person teaching you will need to be at least 21 and the insurance policy on the vehicle will either need to cover you as an additional learner driver or you will need your own insurance; it’s always best to check the fine print as well, as many insurance companies require the other person in the car to be at least 25. Although learning to drive from a relative or friend might seem like a good idea, it’s unlikely to give you the skills needed to pass your test and that’s why it’s always recommend to use a driving instructor for at least some of your time on the road.
When Do I Take My Theory Test?
The theory test will always need to be taken before your actual practical test. However, the exact time you should take it is entirely down to you, some people opt to take it once they have had some experience on the roads, whilst others opt to pass their theory test before they have even has their first driving lesson. No matter what option you go for, you should ensure you regularly revise and take mock tests to prepare you for the real thing. You will need to have a provisional license to be able to take your theory test.
How Many Lessons Does It Take to Learn To Drive?
No two people are the same and the length of time it takes to pick up driving will depend on a number of factors such as the how confident you are on the road and how quickly you take to driving. Most lessons last for 2 hours now and it’s recommend the average learned should have between 10-12 lessons as a minimum before taking their test. Every driver is different and your instructor will advise you on when they think you are ready to take your test.
When Can I Start Driving?
As soon as you have passed your test, you can begin driving that day. Some people opt to use green P plates when they have first passed, to let other drivers know they are new to the roads. However, this isn’t a legal requirement and is a personal choice.
