The opportunity

A growing learner market
A steady pipeline of new learners enters the market every single year.
2

3
Traditional entry requires upfront investment
Many capable candidates are discouraged by the cost of training before they can earn.
4

The point of it
You should not have to find thousands of pounds before you are allowed to start a career. We removed that barrier — so the question becomes whether instructing suits you, not whether you can afford to find out.

What instructors
can earn

£50,000
OTE

According to the National Careers Service, experienced driving instructors can earn over £45,000 a year depending on hours worked and local demand.

You are self-employed. Teach around the school run or build it into something full time — both are normal here.

Could you qualify?

The DVSA set four basic requirements before you can begin the ADI qualification process. Tick what applies to you — nothing is submitted or stored.

Final eligibility is determined by the DVSA, including their suitability requirements. See the official guidance.

All four apply? You can apply.
Tick the boxes above and we will tell you how you stand against the basic requirements.

Applying is not

Checked against the DVSA requirements, and we see which trainers cover your area.
2
We call you
A proper conversation about whether instructing suits you and what it involves.
3
Initial assessment
A practical look at where you are starting from, so the plan is realistic.
4
You decide
Only then do you choose. Nothing is signed before you are sure.

Teaching in
Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough gives a new instructor a steady flow of work. It is a large town with a young population, a test centre of its own at Thornaby, and learners spread right across it rather than concentrated in one pocket.

The road network also makes your job easier. Quiet estate roads at Coulby Newham and Hemlington to start pupils off, a demanding town centre to build them up, the Ladgate Lane and A66 corridors for confidence at speed, and open moorland roads past Nunthorpe for test-ready drivers — all within a short drive of each other.

How the qualification is structured.

Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor is a three-part DVSA qualification. Here is what each stage involves, and where we come in.

Part 1
Theory and hazard perception
A multiple-choice theory test and a hazard perception test, both set at a higher standard than the learner theory test. Prepared for and funded by ESM.
Part 2
Your own driving ability
A practical test of your driving, covering eyesight, vehicle safety questions, general driving and manoeuvres. Prepared for and funded by ESM.
Part 3
Instructional ability
Assessed on a real lesson with a pupil, marked against the DVSA competences for lesson planning, risk management and teaching and learning strategies.
Trainee licence possible from here
The trainee licence
After passing Part 2 you may apply to the DVSA for a trainee licence, which allows you to teach learners while you prepare for Part 3. It is subject to DVSA approval and to completing the required additional training.
Once you qualify
You join the ADI register and are issued your badge. The DVSA carries out a standards check to make sure your teaching continues to meet the required standard, and your registration is renewed periodically.

Full details of the qualification process are on GOV.UK. Requirements are set by the DVSA and can change.

Common questions

Do I really pay nothing upfront?
There are no large upfront course fees to start training with ESM. We invest in your development from day one, and the arrangement is set out clearly before you commit to anything.
How long does it take to qualify?
It varies with how quickly you progress through each part, your availability and DVSA test waiting times locally. Your trainer will give you a realistic picture at your assessment rather than an optimistic one.
When can I start teaching real learners?
Once you have passed Part 2 you can apply to the DVSA for a trainee licence, which lets you teach learners while you work towards Part 3.
Can I train around my current job?
Yes. Plenty of people train while still working, fitting sessions around shifts and family. It takes longer than training intensively, and we will be straight with you about that.
Do I need teaching experience?
No. Most people who qualify have never taught before. Patience, clear communication and being comfortable with nervous people matter more.
How much can driving instructors earn?
The National Careers Service puts experienced instructors above £45,000 a year. What you earn depends on hours worked and local demand.
Are there other costs?
DVSA test, licence and registration fees are set by the government and paid directly to them, the same for every training provider.
What happens after I qualify?
You move onto our franchise network with pupil supply, coaching and mentoring, marketing and back-office support.
